John Alphonsus Bergbower, age 88, of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 10:30 AM Sunday, August 1, 2021 at Newton Care Center in Newton, Illinois.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 PM (Noon) Friday, August 6, 2021, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, Illinois with Fr. Dean Probst celebrating mass. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Newton, Illinois, with full military rites provided by Sainte Marie American Legion Post #932. Visitation will be held from 10:30-11:30 AM Friday, August 6, 2021, at church. In loving memory of John, memorials may be made to St. Thomas Catholic School. John Alphonsus Bergbower was born on July 2, 1933, in Jasper County, Illinois, the son of Cornelius and Clara (Beasler) Bergbower. He graduated from Newton Community High School in 1951. Following graduation, he served his country in the United States Air Force from 1952, till his honorable discharge in 1956.
John was a lifelong farmer and had been a union laborer. He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, Illinois, and the Sainte Marie American Legion Post #932.
John enjoyed attending auctions and collecting.
John is survived by-
Lifelong companion - Flo Barker of Newton, Illinois
Daughter - Tanya Bergbower - Joblon (husband Marc) of Florida
Grandchildren - Kadance Jablon and Adam Jablon
Sister - Caroline Helregal of Lode, Illinois
Sisters-in-law - Betty Bergbower and JoAnn Bergbower
Several Nephews and Nieces also survive
John was preceded in death by his parents, brother Cornelius George Bergbower, Cornelius Paul Bergbower, Joseph Bergbower and sister Clara Marie (Clarance) Schackmann.
