Robert Dean “Bob” McDaniel, 74 of Effingham, passed away on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital in Mattoon.

Military rites will be accorded by the Effingham American Legion Post #120 at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham with a memorial visitation to follow until 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be written to Robert McDaniel so that the family may use this to assist with final expenses.

Robert was born to Myrl L. and Marie (Garrett) McDaniel on October 22, 1947 in Effingham.

Bob graduated from Effingham High School in 1965 and later received an Associate’s Degree from Lakeland College. He served in the United States Air Force as a Radio Operator from 1966 to 1970 and was honorably discharged as a Sargent at that time. He worked for many years at World Color Press and Time Magazine in Effingham in the business office ensuring that the layout for Time/Forbes Magazine was just right.

Bob was an avid sports fan. He loved listening to and watching the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, the fighting Illini basketball and Chicago Bears football. He was a passionate golfer back in the day and loved watching golf on TV. It was common for Bob to call his son, Corey on a whim in his later years, wanting to know if they could get in a round of golf. He enjoyed this time very much, even though his health tried to deter him.

In his younger years, Bob enjoyed watching his son Corey play baseball, basketball and football. Later, when he was blessed with grandchildren, he was so happy to get to watch them play baseball, basketball and football, as well. He loved going to their games or hearing about them if he was unable to make the trip.

If you knew Bob, you knew he was a smart and funny man. He was strong and a fighter. He endured cancer for nearly ten years and never made one complaint about it or let it hinder him from what he wanted to do. He lived a simple life as he got older, but he was happy just playing the lottery, watching sports, doing crossword puzzles and stopping by his son’s house every few days to drop off goodies to the grandkids and grand-dog. His presence will be greatly missed.

Robert is survived by his son, Corey (Heather) McDaniel of Effingham; grandsons, Brady and Ian; grand-dog, Izzy; nephew, Scott McDaniel; cousin, Douglas (Sandy) Heiden of Shumway and various other cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard and Michael McDaniel; nephew, Chris McDaniel.
